Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vulcan?

Vulcan is an externally installed radio-frequency (RF) scale control system designed to influence how scale crystals form and behave in hard water systems.

What Problem Does Vulcan Solve?

Scale reduces heat transfer, restricts flow, fouls sensors, increases maintenance labor, and shortens equipment life. Vulcan addresses the physical behavior of scale formation rather than the chemistry that causes minerals to precipitate.

Does Vulcan Change Water Chemistry?

No. Vulcan does not change pH, conductivity, TDS, LSI, or mineral concentration.

How Does Vulcan Work?

Vulcan introduces a controlled, tuned radio-frequency (RF) field into the water as it flows through the pipe. The frequencies energetically disturb the precipitation process, influencing how minerals form and behave without altering water chemistry.

The RF signal:

  • Interferes at the moment scale first forms, before hard scale can take shape

  • Changes crystal growth orientation so crystals do not form flat, adhesive faces

  • Prevents scale from bonding to pipe surfaces or existing deposits

As a result:

  • Crystals remain suspended longer

  • Deposits remain softer and less adhesive

  • Existing scale is progressively weakened over time

Vulcan does not stop mineral precipitation; it prevents precipitation from becoming hard, adhesive scale.

Is Scale Still Present?

Yes. Minerals remain in the water. Scale may still form, but it forms as soft, non-cemented deposits that are easier to remove during normal operation.

Does Vulcan Remove Existing Scale?

Yes. Over time, existing scale may weaken as new crystal growth no longer reinforces it, allowing gradual release under normal flow and routine maintenance.

What Systems Can Vulcan Be Used On?

Vulcan can be applied to main water lines or directly to any open or closed water system where mineral scale forms, making it suitable for residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and government applications.

Does Vulcan Replace Chemical Treatment?

No. Vulcan is intended to support overall system efficiency, not replace responsible water treatment practices.

Vulcan does not replace chemicals that are required to maintain proper water chemistry, corrosion control, or biological compliance. Vulcan addresses mineral scale behavior within the system and operates independently of existing treatment programs. Any chemicals necessary to maintain safe and compliant operation remain the responsibility of the facility.

In some cases, after stable performance is observed and supported by site specific monitoring data, facilities have chosen to optimize certain scale related chemical inputs. Any adjustments are made by the facility in accordance with their own operational data, regulatory requirements, and risk management policies.

Can Vulcan Cause Corrosion?

No. Because Vulcan does not change water chemistry, it does not create corrosive conditions. Corrosion risk is governed by chemistry, metallurgy, flow velocity, and oxygen levels.

How Is Performance Evaluated?

Performance is evaluated through observed system behavior, including visual scale condition, ease of cleaning, maintenance frequency, heat transfer stability, and overall operational consistency, supported by available operational data and maintenance records.

What Data Is Analyzed to Demonstrate Effectiveness?

We do not introduce artificial performance markers. If scale formation is reduced, the system’s existing operational indicators will reflect it.

Because system design, water chemistry, and load conditions vary significantly by facility, effectiveness is evaluated within the context of each specific installation.

RF vs Electromagnetic Descalers

Electromagnetic descalers primarily affect existing crystals after formation and often have localized, short-lived effects. Vulcan’s RF technology influences crystal nucleation, changing how crystals are formed rather than trying to reorient them after formation.

What Vulcan Does and Does Not Do

Vulcan does:
- Reduce scale adhesion
- Improve cleanability
- Support system efficiency

Vulcan does not:
- Remove minerals
- Soften water
- Replace compliance-driven chemical programs
- Create corrosive water

Why Facilities Choose Vulcan

Facilities choose Vulcan to reduce maintenance burden, extend equipment life, lower chemical dependency where appropriate, and support sustainability goals such as reduced water usage, pollution from chemical use, and associated costs.
